Happ on Mac: Installing and Connecting with an Access Key

Setting up Happ on macOS is simple — download the file, let it open, paste a key or subscription link from the Telegram bot, and connect.

What you'll need beforehand

To run Happ on a Mac you need two things together: the app file and an access key. Even after the app is installed, you can't connect without a key — and keys and subscription links come solely from the service's Telegram bot.

  • An up-to-date macOS version with internet access for downloading
  • A key or subscription link issued by the Telegram bot
  • About five to seven minutes of free time

If you don't yet have a key, see the access keys page for how to request one.

Getting the installer

Download the Mac build from the download page — that same page also lists every other platform, in case you want Happ elsewhere as well.

  • Head to the Happ for macOS download page
  • Choose the file that matches your processor architecture
  • Let it finish downloading into your Downloads folder

Installing and launching the app

Open the downloaded file and drag Happ into the Applications folder. The first time you launch it, macOS may display a warning about an unidentified developer — that's simply Gatekeeper at work, not an indication that anything's wrong with the file.

  • Open Applications and double-click Happ to run it
  • If a warning appears, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and permit the app to run
  • Start Happ once more — this time it opens with no warning

Adding the key and connecting

After the app opens, enter the key or subscription link from the Telegram bot. Usually pasting the link into the correct field is all that's needed — Happ populates the server details automatically.

  • Copy your key or subscription link out of the Telegram bot
  • Paste it into the add-key screen in Happ
  • Select a server and hit connect

This step is explained in greater depth in the article on setting up Happ for the first time.

If the connection fails to go through

Occasionally it doesn't work on the first attempt — the usual causes are an expired key, an unreliable internet connection, or a server that's momentarily down.

  • Verify that the key hasn't expired
  • Switch to another server on the list
  • Relaunch the app and try connecting again

Still stuck? See the Happ not connecting guide for common causes and remedies.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can Happ be installed on macOS without an access key?

The app installs perfectly well by itself, but you'll still need a key or subscription link from the Telegram bot in order to connect to a server.

Why doesn't macOS let Happ open straight away?

That's Gatekeeper's normal behavior for apps distributed outside the App Store; you grant permission just once in System Settings.

Can one key work on macOS and other devices?

Yes — keys and subscriptions are typically linked to your account rather than to one device, so they function across platforms.

Happ won't open after installation — what should I look at?

Review the Privacy & Security permissions on your Mac and try a restart before opening Happ again.
